MEL GIBSON has accepted the lead role in the upcoming film 'Edge of Darkness.' 'Darkness' will be a feature adaptation of the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries and will be directed by MARTIN CAMPBELL, Variety reports.

Britney, wearing sunglasses and a green shirt paired with jeans and boots, and Mel dined along with friends at Romanov restaurant. Both were exclusively caught on tape entering and exiting by www.hollywood.tv. CHARLIZE THERON, GEOFFREY RUSH, DENNIS HOPPER and other stars speak out as Hollywood mourns the loss of HEATH LEDGER, who died Tuesday. He was 28. HELENA CHRISTENSEN, once rumored to be Heath's girlfriend, told Women's Wear Daily she was on her way to see him yesterday when she heard the news: "He was a sweet, smart and talented young man and had many friends. My heart goes out to his family. I am just beyond sad at this point, and shocked ... I was on my way over to pay him a visit when I found out. I had just left him a message and heard his voice on the machine ... He was such a special and genuine person, so extraordinarily talented because he was so raw and honest with his feelings. Did MEL GIBSON receive preferential treatment from the LA County Sheriff's Department during his 2006 arrest for DUI?
According to a report obtained by ET from the Sheriff's Department, Gibson's now-infamous anti-Semitic remarks -- originally contained within the arrest report -- were excised and placed instead in a supplementary document. And further according to the Sheriff Department's report, Gibson's flammable comments were segregated on the orders of the police squad's unit commander in order to, the report states, "limit the media's initial access" to Gibson's tirade.

Stars including RYAN O'NEAL, pictured above, MEL GIBSON, BRITNEY SPEARS, OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN and VICTORIA PRINCIPAL and their families were evacuated from their homes early Sunday morning due to powerful fires raging in the tony celebrity enclave of Malibu, California.
Singer TANYA TUCKER is in Las Vegas but had to evacuate her 18-year-old daughter and their four dogs from her Malibu home after fires closed in on the property, she told KCOP-Channel 13 News. "I told them to take everything they could take," she told the TV anchors via phone. "I have lots of memorabilia, of course, all my stage photos, my clothes, my boots, my shoes and my computer things. My main concern was to get my daughter out of there and my animals. I just feel so horrible for these people that are losing everything."
