It's been 30 years since "Dallas" first hit the airwaves, but Larry Hagman, who played J.R. Ewing -- the fictitious Texas oilman that viewers loved to hate -- is still going strong.
"My health is, I hope, pretty good," Hagman tells ET's Thea Andrews. "I just had my blood tested yesterday. I do it every two months or so. I had a liver transplant 14 years ago, so I have to keep on top of that, but I've got 14 years of it."
Former "Dallas" star PATRICK DUFFY moves from primetime to daytime when he joins the cast of "The Bold and the Beautiful" in the role of Stephen Logan, father of Brooke (KATHERINE KELLY LANG) and grandfather to Hope (RACHEL PACE).
This is not the first time that a former "Dallas" star has appeared on the sudser. LINDA GRAY, who played Sue Ellen Ewing, appeared as Priscilla Kelly in a recurring role on the soap last year.
When the villainous J.R. Ewing (LARRY HAGMAN) was shot at the end of the third season of "Dallas," it was the shot literally heard around the world, as 130 countries were airing the hit series. There were a lot of people who wanted J.R. dead, including his wife Sue Ellen (LINDA GRAY), his brother Bobby (PATRICK DUFFY), his mistress Kristin (MARY CROSBY) and businessman Ray Krebs (STEVE KANALY), just to name a few.
"Who Shot J.R.?" became the highest-rated episode of the series, and now, with the release of the "Dallas: The Complete Third Season" DVD hitting shelves on Tuesday, Aug. 9, fans of the folks from Southfork can revisit all the events leading up to the big bang.
There were a lot of people who wanted "Dallas"' J.R. Ewing dead, including his wife Sue Ellen, his brother Bobby, his mistress Kristin and businessman Ray Krebs, just to name a few, so when J.R. was shot as the cliffhanger for the end of the second season, fans everywhere tuned in. "Who Shot J.R.?" became the highest-rated episode of the series.
To keep the secret, multiple endings were made, so that even the cast didn't know who done it until the night it aired. Check out the special when CBS airs an encore performance of "Dallas Reunion: Return to Southfork," Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m., to get the inside story from the cast.
Come on down to Southfork on tonight's ET, when LARRY HAGMAN takes us on a personally guided tour of the house that "Dallas" made famous. The occasion? Warner Home Video is releasing "Dallas: The Complete First and Second Seasons" on DVD on Tuesday, Aug. 24, so that fans of the longest-running, primetime soap opera can revisit the scandal and secrets of the Ewing clan.
"Watching the first episode was fun," says Larry, who played the ignoble J.R. Ewing for 14 years. "We were all young and looking for our characters."
"Dallas," "Knots Landing" and "Falcon Crest" were all major primetime soaps for CBS. Now, the eye network is utilizing its former stars -- LINDA GRAY, JOAN VAN ARK and LORENZO LAMAS -- on its daytime dramas, "The Young and the Restless" and "The Bold and The Beautiful."
Gray, who came to fame as the former beauty queen Sue Ellen Ewing on "Dallas," has joined the cast of "B&B." If you recall, she started as a nice girl on "Dallas," and the fans loved her. But marriage to master manipulator J.R. Ewing (LARRY HAGMAN) soon changed that and she turned to alcohol and revenge! This time out, fans will love to hate her from the get-go. In her new role, Gray gets to use a few of the lessons in wickedness that she learned at the feet of her former TV hubby when she plays the nasty Priscilla Kelly.
TV's bad boy J.R. Ewing (LARRY HAGMAN, "Dallas") and TV's beloved Andy Taylor (ANDY GRIFFITH, "The Andy Griffith Show") are as different as AL CAPONE and MOTHER TERESA. But this Nov. 11, both classic characters have something in common -- a reunion of the casts of their legendary series. The "Dallas" reunion takes place on SOAPnet at 11 p.m., and "The Andy Griffith Show" on CBS at 8 p.m.
On tonight's ET, both Larry and Andy take us back in time to the wonderful days of yesteryear. Oops! Sorry. That is the "Lone Ranger."
