The Harry Potter author urges others to get help for depression.
Speaking to an Edinburgh University student magazine, author JK ROWLING said she had thoughts of suicide after separating from her first husband in her 20s, the BBC reports.
"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking 'I'm a little bit miserable'," she said in an interview with ADEEL AMINI for the magazine.
"I definitely had leanings towards depression from quite an early age," she added. "Then, mid-20s, life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted."
It was in the early 1990s when she suffered depression while living in a small Edinburgh flat with her baby daughter, JESSICA, which she was only able to afford after a friend paid the deposit. It was there that she began writing the first Harry Potter book.
"The thing that made me face the fact that this was not a normal state that I was in was probably my daughter," she said.
She finally sought professional help and underwent cognitive behavioral therapy, a form of counseling that helps patients control negative thoughts.
The author, now 42, said she had found the sessions "absolutely invaluable."
"The funny thing is I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed," she said. "Never. I think I'm abnormally shameless on that account because what's to be ashamed of?"
She went on to say that anyone suffering from depression should "go and get help."
"I went through a really rough time and I'm quite proud of the fact that I got out of that," she concluded.
